Today’s topic: How to learn German Articles?

One of the main problems of a German student is the articles of the nouns. At first, often overlooked, then uncontrollable.

I have been working intensively for the last few years to help my students learn the articles of nouns in a better way.

In the German language, there are unfortunately 3 different articles (“der” for male, “das” for neuter and “die” for female).

The most used German article is “die” with a use of 46%. Then comes “der” with 34% and “das” with 20%.

So if you have no idea what the right article is, then with “die” the possibilities are the best.

More information.

As I am a big friend of images and colors, in my opinion, the best advice to learn the articles of nouns is the following:

Assign a character to each article. For example:

“der” – lion

“das” – alien

“die – Ariel

And if you can’t remember an article, use your character.

For example, you want to learn the following words with articles:

der Ball (ball), then imagine a lion playing football.

das Auto (car), then let the alien drive a racing car.

die Bank (bench), then Ariel poses on a bench.

These images help as a bridge between article and noun and, in any case, it is easier to remember them. The crazier the image, the more likely the learning effect.

My next tip for noun articles is to separate nouns into thematic groups that have the same article.

Below is a summary of the most important groups:

days (der Montag, der Dienstag, …), months (der Januar, der Februar, …), hours of the day (der Morgen, der Mittag, …), cardinal points (der Norden, der Süden, …), air movement (der Wind, der Sturm, …), precipitations (der Regen, der Schnee, …), minerals (der Diamant, der Rubin, …), alcohol (der Rum, der Wein, …), car brands (der Audi, der Mercedes, …)

metals (das Gold, das Silber, …), letters (das A, das B, …), colors (das Rot, das Blau, …), hotels (das Hilton, …), substantiated verbs (das Schwimmen, das Fahren, …), English words (das Internet, das Handy, …), minimizing (das Kätzchen, das Häuschen, …)

flowers (die Rose, die Tulpe, …), trees (die Eiche, die Tanne, …), rivers (die Elbe, die Oder, …), boats (die Titanic, die Aida, …), motorcycle brands (die Yamaha, die Honda, …)

Many other textbooks about learning German often talk about typical endings that can be assigned to articles. These are usually long and very abstract lists. Unfortunately, these lists are not very suitable as learning support because they are very long and probably not complete. In addition, there are exceptions.

But I would like to mention the most important one for each article.

der” – many nouns ending in –er are masculine such as “der Lehrer” (teacher), “der Schüler” (student), ….

das” – all nouns ending in –chen are neuter, therefore it is also “das Mädchen” (girl) and not “die Mädchen”. -chen in the end is to minimize everything.

die” – there are many nouns ending in –e, and more than 90% of these words are feminine.

More information.

I hope I have brought some light into the darkness and everyone will find a way to learn the articles better now.

In any case, it is always advisable to pay attention to the correct article and instruct others in case of errors of the article to be corrected.
